I have had two WordPress blogs hacked into in the past. That was at a time when I was doing very little internet marketing, and until I found time to address the situation (months later), these sites were penalised in the search engines. They were not removed, but the rankings were reduced.
Since scare tactics seem to be what compels some people to take fix hacked wordpress a little more seriously, or at the very least start thinking about the problem, let me shoot a scare tactics your way.
I protect an access to important files on the blog's server by putting an index.html file in the particular directory, which hides the files out of public view.
Harness Scanner goes through the files on your website database, comment and place tables. You are also notified by it for plugin names that are unusual. It does not remove anything, it warns you.
Can you view that folder, what if you visit WP-Content/plugins? If so, upload this blank Index.html file into that folder as well so Get More Information people can't see what plugins you might have. Because if your current version of WordPress is current, if you are using an old plugin or a plugin with a security hole, then someone this content can use this to get access.
Whenever your site is new, you don't always consider needing security but you do have to protect your investment and yourself. Having a site find more go down and not being able to restore it quickly may mean a loss of customers who can't find you and probably won't remember to search for your site later. Don't let this happen to you. Back your site up as soon as you get it started, as the site is operational, and schedule frequent backups for as long. This way, you'll have WordPress security and peace of mind.
